The book is written in style I've never experienced before, dude ;-) It is well structured and gives broad overview of J2EE web technologies. As it is stated on several places, it is aimed to prepare readers on Sun certification exam SCWCD plaform 5.0 and fully cover exam objectives. Therefore it goes to deeper details only in areas related to the exam. Reading of the book is everything but not boring experience and soft humor of nice book models will definitely relax your brain and/or stimulate concentration at the right moment ;-) After reading it I succeeded and passed the exam with great score.
Small objections I have only to the chapter of design patterns, which could be more clear and precise in definitions and its mock exam questions. The chapter could be updated with the information about platform for each pattern, which is aimed to solve archit. problem for as there are differences between EJB 2.0 and 3.0. Most of patterns are focused on solving problems related to EJB 2.0 and are obsolete for newer version of standard. I miss also mentioning of JSF as component based MVC framework alternative to request driven Struts framework (front controller pattern). I was also a bit confused from the fact that URL rewriting is not required by the spec because it's not clearly stated in the text and the space it occupies in the book.
But still, I'm giving 5 stars.

I've been toying with Java EE servlets and JSPs off and on for 7 years but always had lots of questions and few answers and no book inspired me to keep reading, until now.
This book makes learning Java fun and its "There are no stupid questions" Q & A interspersed throughout each chapter has an amazing ability to ask, then answer, exactly the same questions I am having at that point. The diagrams do a phenomenal job of explaining what happens in the path from user to server and back. They spend pages and pages just explaining what the HttpServletRequest and HttpServletResponse objects are!
The humorous photos with captions keep me reading... on the bus as I commute to work... during my lunch break... on the bus ride home... in the evenings at home. I had planned to read Malcolm Gladwell's "blink" next, but that novel sits on the shelf at home as I continue to plow through this delightful entity. My previous attempt to learn this material was "Servlets and JavaServer Pages: The J2EE Technology Web Tier" by Falkner & Jones, but that book is as dry as a college textbook, so I never really absorbed much. I highly recommend this "Head First Servlets & JSP"!

Helpful, but nothing too exciting. May be the topic was not too interesting for me? or may be it just didn't open my eyes for something new. Don't know. But overall book is okay.
Will I use it in everyday life? No. Will I suggest to purchase this book for something who is just starting with Servlets and JSPs, or for somebody who feels his knowledge is weak/so-so? Yes. But this books was CREATED for the people of this type, so it's perfect for them.

I bought the book because the girl in the cover looks hot. And I need to have a full understanding of Servlets and JSP. The book really helps a novice web programmer like me. The book answers the silly questions that pop up in my mind. I can say that after reading the book and DOING THE TUTORIALS(whew!). I am more knowledgeable and had a greater understanding on how Tomcat and Servlets works and how to use JSP. (Well, the girl in the cover is a good motivation to open the book and continue what I have left off.) Now off to take the exam!

This book was excellent. It was my primary resource for studying for the SCWCD exam. I did very well on the exam and owe it to this book. It was also very fun to read.
