FlashBrighton: Ruby On Rails: the Webapp meat to your Flash gravy
Tue, 21 Jul 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
Ruby On Rails is a popular framework for building web applications. But upon my soul, a knowledge of 'Ruby on Rails' - or, by the somewhat more unseemly monicker by which it goes amongst enthusiasts, 'RoR' - will indubitably make your digital labours considerably less fractious. Indeed, if you will permit me what i feel is a particularly illustrative metaphor, one might say it could act as the 'meat' for your Flash 'gravy'.

Tue, 4 Aug 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
Gather round children, as we tell you a ghoulish story about science, complexity and goblins! Once upon a time, in a land far, far away across the great ocean, there lived a beautiful and clever princess called Kristin Henry. The land where she lived was vast and bounteous, but it was beset by cruelty and confusion. Dark, twisted forests of information covered the landscape, and were haunted by evil 'Spam' goblins. No one dared venture into the spooky woods and maps were unknown.

FlashBrighton: Processing.js with Brendan Dawes
Tue, 18 Aug 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
Brendan Dawes woke with a start. He was troubled, a man with a past. He'd been working with 'Flash' for years now, he'd been at it so long he wasn't even sure what version he started with anymore. The past was hazy, as if the city rain has washed it clean from the streets. Once the whole neighborhood was crawling with Flash, so much so that you never even noticed it. 'Ubiquitous', that's what it was. The word came back to him like a bad hangover.

FlashBrighton: Bugfixing Other People's Flash
Tue, 25 Aug 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
Niqui Merret brushed the creepers aside and pushed further into the dense code. She was the point man for Bugfixers XXIV Flash Corps and had been leading the line since God knows when. She knew well that in the jungle of other people's ActionScript the canopy is so thick that the light only filters through in pale shafts. She took a step forward, the muddy nook sloshed against her thighs. Forgotten slicks of AS2 napalm drifted across the surface, burning fresh sores into old wounds.

Ooh, careful Niqui, you nearly bumped poor Owen there! We wouldn't want 'Health & Safety' coming in and ruining the party now would we?' Everyone squirmed uncomfortably in their sweaty plastic seats. Jo's shoulders slumped.

FlashBrighton: The Flash Games School of Wizardry
Tue, 8 Sep 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
Iain Lobb-Lupin brushed aside the potions and scrolls that covered the old desk and planted a curious rectangular metal object at its centre. It was folded at the centre and one of its faces displayed a shining surface covered in mystic icons. 'This Harry' he said, gasping for breath 'is a "laptop"'. He wiped his brow. "S'Muggle technology, essentially a primitive binary encoder, but I've added some Hogwash touches, which should help guard against Voldemort's spells'.

FlashBrighton: Character Animation & Lip-Syncing
Tue, 13 Oct 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom

She arranged her emerald scarf with precision: looped once, hanging just below the waistline. Satisfied, she sasheyed into the foyer and across to the pristine white reception desk, curls bouncing. "I'm here for the interview with Flashy Magazine, for the 'Character Animation' role" she beamed, perfect pearly-whites gleaming.

FlashBrighton: Robot Wars II
Tue, 3 Nov 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
Joe Chung strapped the dermatrodes across his forehead and clicked in the countdown. 3, 2, 1... The digital perfections of the Matrix swiftly replaced the grimy bedsit. He keyed some familiar coords and the scene shifted quickly to a large, flat circular space, skinned in cybersteel: the Robot Wars arena, his old fight-to-the-death ring for AS3bots made for his FlashBrighton partners. Bennett's broken bot still lay wrecked in the centre of the space.

The hobbit Tim Baggins stared into the deep, dark wood, and curled his toes nervously. Dusty cobwebs hung from the twisted boughs and not a single shaft of sunlight penetrated into the gloom. The air hung thick and motionless like treacle. 'We're not going in there... are we?' He turned and looked up at the dwarf king Owen, son of Thráin.

Tue, 17 Nov 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
His uniform immaculately pressed, Paolo Fierro entered the debriefing room, holding his officer's cap tightly across his chest. The room was large, oak lined, and mostly empty except for an line of military portraits, a US flag draped in the corner, and a imposing wooden desk, behind which sat his commanding officer, General Jack Ryan. He saluted the General crisply. 'Sir!' Ryan looked up distractedly. 'At ease Fierro' he said, putting down his fountain pen and leaning backwards.

FlashBrighton: Planning Meeting
Tue, 24 Nov 2009, 19:00 in Hove, United Kingdom
It was a cold night in Preston Park, but nothing would dampen the spirits of the multitude that had travelled to be there. Anticipation was high as the cry of 'LEE DE LISLE, LEE DE LISLE' ran through the crowd. Backstage Vice President-elect Joe Summers nudged her running mate in the back, whispering 'Come on Seb, get out there and give them what they want.' Straighting his tie in the mirror, Sebastian smiled back at Joe's reflection, turned, and advanced onto the platform.
