Some detailed information on what to look for in a joomla host would be great. Ie what are the optimum PHP memory limits, should safe mode really be on or off and what security measures to install if it is off.

Reasoning: we are having intermittant 500 internal server errors, and have spent 2 weeks trying to find out the reasons behind this. Are some templates too feature rich and demand too much processor power? Are there any other factors which generate 500 internal server errors?

Should GZIP page compression be turned on? Are there any other settings which can be tweaked for best performance?

How to make these adjustments in a shared hosting environment.

Thanks.
