So much time editing configuration files, customizing web.xml files, writing injection definitions, tweaking build scripts, modifying page layouts, restarting apps on each change, aaaahhhh! “Where has all the fun gone? Why has everything become so tedious? I just wanted to whip up a quick app to track our customer signups! There’s got to be a better way...”
Grails is that better way. It takes care of much of the tedium for you--behind-the-scenes--so that you can focus on your core business needs. Convention over configuration, popularized by Ruby on Rails, frees you from the creation and maintenance of the plethora of XML files required by other frameworks. Groovy, the dynamic language, adds a layer of more than just syntactic sugar, but other dynamic features such as closures.
This presentation by amateur programmer David Castro (http://www.carolinakinetic.com) will show you the highlights of the Grails framework, from developing quick-and-dirty apps, to leveraging third-party plug-ins, to writing in 5 lines what would take 25+ lines in Java. Come and join in!
