Geeks In The Peaks 2009

Date

Venue
New House Organic Farm , Ashbourne, GB

A low-tech gathering of technology, mapping, outdoor and other assorted geeks in the fabulous Peak District.

Location confirmed. There is only camping space available, no hard-roof accommodation. The site is a working organic farm in a rich archaelogical area. It is well situated but facilities are basic - don't expect running water or showers or electricity.

What's going on? The emphasis is enjoying the Great Outdoors, getting natural UV rather than the kind generated from your computer monitor, with plenty of group activities including (but not limited to) kite-flying, climbing, bouldering, walking, ballooning, mountain biking and trail cycling and sailing, as well as mapping and geo-caching. An archaeological tour of the site can be arranged if there's interest.

Plus we'll not be far from Carsington Water (good for water and bike activities) or for a walk to Dovedale. There's no obligation to stick in a single group. We'll wing it very much based on the weather.

There won't be special guest talks, but this is really about the social. Having said that, there's nothing to stop you from holding geeky discussions around the camp fire into the early hours. Don't be surprised though if it turns into a hub for sharing ghost stories by the end of the night though.

What to bring You will need to bring your own camping gear (resourceful ones amongst you will no doubt pool equipment). The farm sell organic meat for barbecues (and have a few eggs), but you're best to stock up on your own rations/beer/water (for cooking/cleaning). Leave your laptops and ghetto blasters at home.

A head torch, antiseptic handwash and some baby wipes are always recommended.

What next? Register your interest here while we finalise some way of collecting monies etc to cover cost of camping and firewood. Places are limited, so advance booking will be essential.
