Now that we know how to build some basic Android apps, it's time to expand on that knowledge.
Marko Gargenta, who is responsible for Android training at Marakana (and happens to be my brother), offered to give another talk, this time on a wide range of data persistence options available in the Android SDK, including: - Shared Preferences - SQLite Database - Content Providers - File System
As before, you can either sit back, relax, and enjoy the show... or you can take a more active role, and follow along, building your own version of the GolfScore app. If you opt for the latter, you need to bring your own laptop - already configured with the Android SDK (including Eclipse).
For those of you that are already proficient with Android, you may still want to swing by, share your wisdom with the fellow attendees, and network with others in the Android community.
Marakana will provide drinks and pizzas for this event and we'll give a way some free Android books, courtesy of Pearson Education and O'Reilly Media.
Because the space is limited, make sure you RSVP sooner... rather than later if you want to reserve your seat.
If any of you would like to give a talk at one of our future meetups (e.g. share your wisdom about a specific API, or talk about an app you built), I want to hear from you!
About Marko Gargenta Marko Gargenta has been programming in Java even before it was named Java. His background is in very large enterprise web application development but he's also had a fair-share of UI experience having rewritten the entire AWT into lightweight components before Java Swing ever came out. He's a big believer in agile development processes, being a certified ScrumMaster himself as well as contributor to eXtreme Programming methodology.
Marko is a professional consultant and instructor. He's taught teams of organizations such as Sony-Ericsson, Ericsson Canada, MetroPCS, Experian, DoJ, DoD, and many others. He's published a PHP/MySQL by Example book with Prentice Hall (world's largest tech publisher) as well as created many of Marakana's courseware, including the Android series.

Tatsuhiko Miyagawa will be presenting a talk on Plack on Tuesday, November 24th, 7pm at Six Apart World Headquarters. Plack is a set of PSGI reference server implementations and helper utilities for Web application frameworks, exactly like Ruby's Rack. It supports Standalone, CGI, FCGI, Apache, AnyEvent, Coro, Danga::Socket and many other server environments. This will be the last talk of the year for SF.pm, we will be having a social in December instead of a speaker.

Happy 2009 Holidays SF Ruby Meetup

I'm scheduling this Meetup a little earlier in the month to avoid conflicts with the never-ending Holiday parties. There are already a bunch of talks and I'll update this page with the details once I nail them down. Perhaps we should do a food/toy/charity drive or something... [divider] Send me your ideas, suggestions, etc.

Justin Swanhart - Flexviews & managing large amounts of data in MySQL
1km away in San Francisco
Managing large amounts of data in MySQL can be very difficult. In order to quickly answer queries, summary tables are often created which contain aggregated data from one or more table. Maintaining such aggregations is often problematic as it is often accomplished with a patchwork of SQL scripts and cron jobs. Flexviews is a toolkit which includes tools for the creation of such tables, while also making a large subset of them incrementally maintainable.
