Windows Management Instrumentation has two distinct areas of use, one is for configuration where it can be an extremely useful tool to manage and configure SQL server installations, the other area is for Alerts where it can be an extremely useful tool to monitor SQL Server and an alternative to DDL triggers or SQL Trace.

Hi, I want to achieve following things in a remote SQL SERVER 2005 DB (Windows 2003 server) from a client machine (Windows XP). 1) Retrieval of Disk Space information in remote machine hosting Sql Server 2005 DB 2) Intimation of the SQL SERVER 2005 shut down to client machine when Sql Serve 2005 shut down is happening 3) Monitoring the status of the jobs scheduled in Sql Server 2005 4) Retrieval of Error log Information from remote machine in case of schedule job failure Right now am using Registry access and Extended Procedures of Sql Server 2005 to achieve some of the above things. I want to get rid of the registery access, extended procedures approach. I am interested in 2 things 1) Analyzing how WMI will help me in the above Database activities from a remote client machine 2) Is it WMI the only way to achieve the above requirements. (Cant we do it Windows Service, Web Service, Remote Management) I am new to WMI technology Please share your opinion, thoughts Regards, Palanivel
