Cannot get sound on computer

  Running XP cannot get the sound, windows media player showing that it is on but nothing coming out.
  Also tried to Run Gansters Game working ok, but no sound...Cant work out why. Appreciate your Help..:
  

  
  Also running ComproPVR TV I am getting sound thru speakers for that. confused:

  is your sound card listed in the hardware manager ?
  
  has the sound card worked under xp before ?
  is this a fresh install, or did it just stop working after a while ?
  
  i find a re-install usually fixed windows hardware problems.
