Phone dialer in VB using MSComm

Hi. I had been reading some of the discussions on this board looking for help on a problem that I have been stuck on for the longest time. I have to develop a phone dialer in VB using MSComm. The code that I have written so far can dial a number and hang up, but now I need to also play a message for the called party. For this I understand that I have to first detect when the phone was picked up and only then, play an audio file through the modem. I checked to see if the modem returns some response (Frommodem = Frommodem + Inbuffer) when the phone is picked up but it doesn't. I have searched all over the net the past several weeks with every search expression possible but nothing's made it clear how to do it. I still don't have any idea what to do. I've looked up modem commands and used them but nothing seems to work. I don't know where it's going wrong and if it's the right command at all. I really need help. I am not a professional developer and dotNet and VB are both things that I have essentially learnt on my own while working on this code. My teachers don't know much about dotNet and I don't know anyone else who does. I have to complete this for a technical presentation in college this month and am hoping someone who can help me will reply. Please please can anyone help, I'm at my wits' end..
