Episode synopsis

Speaker: Don Vilen, Chief Scientist, Buysight & former Microsoft SQL Server Team Member

This session covers the basics of Filtered Indexes and Sparse Columns, and then dives into the areas where they work well—and not so well—both together and separately.  Don will show demos that show how they work and when they work well.

You Will Learn:

  • About Filtered Indexes and Sparse Columns, both powerful additions to SQL Server
  • When to use them separately and together so you can apply them appropriately
  • How to save index space and improve performance with Filtered Indexes and Sparse Columns

Don Vilen was on the SQL Server team at Microsoft for 13 years and helped develop six versions of SQL Server.

Before joining Buysight in October 2010, Don Vilen was Principal Architect at Scalability Experts for nearly 3 years, in Seattle, New York City, and around the world, working with Microsoft SQL Server database customers, guiding them through complex performance, upgrade, migration, and consolidation projects.

Don was on the SQL Server team at Microsoft from to 1994 to 2007 as the Program Manager on the Storage Engine component of SQL Server, focusing on high availability and the storage of large objects.
