The new committee will develop guidelines, justifications, and implementation directions for an execution environment for semantic web services. The aim of a semantic web service is to allow integration and cooperation to become ad-hoc and dynamic. The committee well not be developing a specification, but describing the ways in which knowledge management and semantic tools can augment SOA. It will be examining existing methods such as W3C’s Semantic Web, Owl, and Topic Maps for their potential in an SOA context.

The Organisation for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) is to define an architecture to incorporate the application of semantics into service-oriented systems, so providing intelligent mechanisms for consuming semantic web services.
