Since the release of Windows Phone 7, Microsoft has been touting the first major update to the OS which was scheduled to arrive initially in early 2011. It’s now even started pushing the next major release, scheduled for the end of this year. And yet, the first update promised by Microsoft is not yet here.
There have been a range of problems bringing the update to actual devices. We all thought Christmas had come early in February, when an update was pushed to all devices. It turned out this was only to enable the update process for the next release – and it bricked a very large number of Samsung and other devices when it eventually arrived.
The leader of Microsoft’s team charged with deploying new WP7 software worldwide eventually took to their blog to explain exactly why getting the updates to the phones was causing such a headache. They cite the combination of Microsoft and hardware component manufacturers’ new software, the wide number of carriers, manufacturers, and devices worldwide, and the carriers themselves for the delays that we’re now seeing. However, I suppose we could forgive the carriers for wanting to enforce their usually-rigorous tests even stronger following the last minor update’s debacle.
