Microsoft previews Windows 8 Server

Now that Windows 8 has had its fair share of news, Microsoft have turned their attention to Windows 8 Server, the up-and-coming replacement for Windows Server 2008 R2 (the server equivalent of Windows 7).

Microsoft has always been huge in virtualisation, especially in the enterprise. With that in mind, a lot of the news around Windows 8 Server was regarding Hyper-V. The next Hyper-V will support at least 16 virtual processors per machine, according to Mary Jo Foley, an increase from the current release. Additionally, a new feature has been announced called Hyper-V Replica, which provides asynchronous virtual machine replication. This obviously has endless possibilities for providing better uptime and backup support, and apparently not only will scheduled and immediate backup options be available, but no extra charges will be levied based on the number of replicated VMs.

There's more on what Microsoft have announced of Windows 8 Server in a video posted on TechNet. Alternatively, look out for more information at the BUILD conference in September.
