Canonical have released the latest release of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, the Intrepid Ibex. In a press release, they stated the new Desktop edition was “designed for the pervasively connected digital lifestyle” – and that’s reflected in the list of new features: native support for 3G network adapters with Network Manager, content streaming from the BBC, and the ability to create bootable USB keys for netbooks, to name a few.

Reportedly having 8 million current users, Ubuntu has rapidly grown from a new release 4 years ago. The new Server edition features improved virtualisation, Java support, and better system management features. It also includes a new feature which allows user’s directories to be encrypted and mounted when they log on, allowing data to be kept secure even if the entire file system is stolen. Ubuntu 8.10 is available free from the Ubuntu website.
