ASP.NET or VB.NET exe??

  Hi, I am wanting to creat an application that is very data driven from anywhere (providing login is OK).
  

  
  The way I see it I have a few choices, ASP.NET web pages or a exe that gets passed through http or a local exe that is networked to the data.
  

  
  Any suggestions? I am used to VB.NET programming and not that familiar with ASP. How would i go about using a local exe taht comunicates with 1 Main server (SQL 2000 or above) from a normal internet connection?
  

  
  does VPN have anything to do with it?
  

  
  which method do bigger companies use?
