HDD to Big?

Hi, just fixing a computer for a friend, HDD failed.

I replaced it with a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9
    80Gb ATA/133 HDD

My problem is that when trying to install XP, it freezes at "Setup is starting windows".
I did a bit of googling and found several possibilities.
Upgraded the BIOS to latest version -no fix
The HDD is not faulty, nor the installation CD as I stuck the HDD and even CDROM dirve into another PC to test.

    The motherboard is a 7VM400M-RZ.

I'm guessing the motherboard doesn't fully support the larger HDD?

Is there a fix, or is it something else I've missed?

Any help would be gratefully apreciated.
