Poker hand readers and other related programs??

To start I appologise if this is compleatly the wrong section to post this in but at the moment i have no idea how this works.

I have seen programs that run alongside poker clients which 'read' the hand which you get dealt, then do calculations about various odd's and things to supposedly help you win.

I am interested in how these hand readers actually get the information from the client in the first place. I have developed a few strategies for various games that are dictated by chance, and wish to put some programs together to be able to test them. An example would be of an online roulette table... the ball would spin and the number would appear in a given area on the client, is there any way of writting a function to read that displayed number, or would I have to (in some way) intercept and translate the code sent through the net to the client.

I really have no clue, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Mike.
