Agile Software Development: True Adoption or Just a Label?

In the analysis about a recent survey on agile adoption (http://www.methodsandtools.com/dynpoll/oldpoll.php?Agile2), there is the fear that as agility is now becoming "trendy", we may see a number of organizations that will qualify now themselves as "agile", without implementing the essence of the agile software development practices. Has anybody see some signs of such situation?

Do you mean agile equating to gung-ho? ... or simply some of the agile tools being used (like unit testing) as 'proof' of an agile world?

I don't know what you mean by "gung-ho", but what I mean is a situation where declare themselves "agile" because it is the politically correct answer. Using unit testing is already a good thing, but the situation is more that companies would send some people to a 3 days XP training and then declare themselves "agile".

Tantamount to doing a .Net course and proclaiming yourself to be .Net proficient... ridiculous IMHO. Takes a lot more than a training course to prove you're capable of doing anything - its total window dressing.

Besides, XP (Kent Beck) is only one of the many varieties of "agile" methodologies out there at the moment.
