Datasets and updating databases

I'm updating to a database table that has an autonumber column. For a new entry from my dataset, how do I get the number the database assigns in this column, so I can use it for other tables? So far this column is not being reflected back into my dataset. I need this number to reference it in child tables. (I've seen some suggestions that say use a query to get the max autonumber right after updating. While this is probably the correct entry, I'm not sure it's 100%. What if lots of users are writing several new entries to this database at the same time? What assurance do I have that the max autonumber is necessarily mine?)
