    ChicagoRuby: Downtown - Growing Mad Mimi: Sharing Disruptive Techniques

    Gary Levitt (of Mad Mimi) contacted Dave Hoover (of Obtiva) in early 2007 about building an email marketing web site in Ruby on Rails. In subsequent months and years, Gary and Dave collaborated almost daily in order to improve, scale, fix, and market Mad Mimi into one of the leading email marketing sites on the web. Dave will share his biggest lessons from this project. Most of the lessons are not technical, though Ruby and Rails certainly facilitated them.

If you're new to rails, find out what gems and tools you need to install to be most productive. If you're a Rails veteran, trade tips & tricks with other veterans. If you're an entrepreneur, meet some Rails developers that you can brainstorm with. And by the way... bring your laptop!

    ChicagoRuby: Downtown - GeneXus Demo

    Developer/instructor Daniel Coellar will demonstrate GeneXus, an IDE for Ruby and other languages, by building a small invoicing application from scratch in Ruby. He will also show how the product uses patterns to audit any table at the field level without changing or having access to the original source. The demo will be followed by a discussion with Rick Zachmann, a developer who has used the product to solve real-world business problems.

    This meeting will focus on hands-on pair programming. Ginny Hendry led a great random pairing session in Elmhurst, so she's bringing her act downtown! People of every Ruby level are welcome to come and participate. Please come prepared with the following: a laptop with Ruby () and RSpec () installed, a basic working knowledge of the Ruby language, a general knowledge of Conway's Game of Life (see Wikipedia). Even if you've never programmed in Ruby, you're welcome to come and observe.

Come on out and try it even if you've never paired before. This is a great opportunity to learn!

    John W. Long created Radiant, a Rails-based CMS, here in Chicago. Sean Cribbs is the current lead developer for Radiant. Long and Cribbs will join us via videoconference for an in depth discussion of Radiant. Radiant is a no-fluff content management system built with Ruby on Rails. Radiant makes it easy to get a new site up and running, but also makes it easy for developers to customize the experience for their users.
