In-Field Data Discovery through Location Based Services Presented by Gobe Hobona from the Centre for Geospatial Science at the University of Nottingham Historically, a student or researcher conducting fieldwork was only able to search for datasets relevant to their study sites after downloading data from their mobile devices into a computer back at their laboratories.

During the course of Septembers Android User Group, we will present 3 talks of 15 minutes on the following subjects: Using Android GPS to measure race car performance Presented by Dr Paul Thomas Paul will talk about using GPS hardware on the G1 to turn the phone into a datalogger for lap times, G-forces and car positioning on the track. From this data we can inspect tyre and engine performance, and also see which parts of the track can be taken faster in order to reduce lap times.

Richard will give an overview of Mippin.com's Android applications and a run through of the Ultimate Stopwatch and Battery Widget.

Android is an Open Handset Alliance (OHA) project sponsored by Google which offers a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. People interested the innovative network effects of opensourcing mobile device applications where the experience will surpass the web, and more importantly where immersive, location aware mashups, virtual simulations, metaverse services start to emerge should be interested.

Does Open = Free? An afternoon at Open Mobile Summit, an evening with maddog

We?ve teamed up with the organisers of the Open Mobile Summit to create a special presentation for the Android User Group led by one of the Summit?s speakers, the infamous open source visionary and chief advocate of openmoko, Jon 'maddog' Hall. In addition, the organisers are offering 30 qualified apps developers FREE access to the afternoon sessions of the conference on 11th June. For those that would like to attend the whole 2-day conference, we have 10 passes at £500. (retail at £1495).
