Pittsburgh Black Swan Book Club

We read various non-fiction books rough around the topic of "how things happen." To date, we have read Guns, Germs and Steel, Blink, Fooled by Randomness, The Logic of Failure and The Black Swan: the Impact of the Highly Improbable. We read The Clock of the Long Now (for July) and another Jared Diamond book, Collapse, in August-September. Meetings are a Sunday brunch, and my original plan was to have a second meeting on a weekday evening, and will revisit this idea if there is interest.

    November/December Black Swan meetup

    Pittsburgh, United States

As usual, the holidays throw a monkey wrench into when to have the meetup. The 21s is very soon, and the 29th is still part of Thanksgiving weekend. So I am thinking December 6 at 10:30 am. The book is "The Future of the Internet and How to Stop it" by Jonathan Zittrain. This is now out in paperback. The title is something of a misnomer--it is more about the future character of the internet as open but vulnerable versus closed but secure.

We had a light but worthwhile turnout for In the Wake of Chaos. For our next book, Predictably Irrantional by Dan Ariely will be fun--note- no need to buy the new edition. The Panera near Magee Womens (at Halket/Blvd. of the Allies) proved to be a very nice location. I'll try to get the private room again.

  • July/August Black Swan Bruch

    Sun, 2 Aug 2009, 14:30 - 16:30 in Pittsburgh, United States

I've revised the book plan, in part because the book below is still pretty expensive, and this book is available for $1 on www.abe.com:In the Wake of Chaos : Unpredictable Order in Dynamical Systems by Stephen H. Kellert Linked: How Everything Is Connected to Everything Else and What It Means (Paperback)by Albert-Laszlo Barabasi (Author) is an optional book.We still want to start the Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind by Julian Jaynes.
