This book really is worth every penny. It makes learning about Java much easier. Anyone just learning Java should get this book. It is not filled wit all those gibberish details that most Java books have that tend to confuse you. Get this book as part of you collection.

I'm in CS 161, but the lectures are somewhat of a joke. I learn more just from reading the book and doing the programming projects. The book has a logical progression of techniques, and an optional "Graphics Track" Which get's you started working with GUI's right away. I think it's safe to say this copy is going to stay in my personal reference library. Get your own!

What this is /not/ is a code dictionary. It has a limited glossary in the back, but you'd be better off looking up the Java API, or an O'Reilly type code dictionary.

I bought this book for a Java class I am taking, and it is one of the best technical books I've ever read. First, it is over 1000 pages long. It starts slow with basic theory and code examples. It progresses throughout the book to more advanced topics. This book is non assuming and WILL teach you how to write and understand Java.

In the later chapters it touches on other topics like data structures, xml and web application architecture -- definitely not basic concepts.

I read the 2 star review that claims you will get rid of this book as soon as your done with it, but that's not the case for me. Whoever wrote that review probably has a really big ego -- or didn't read the book -- or doesn't like writing Java code. I will keep this book because it taught me so much and I may refer to it in the future.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ -- if you're learning the language.
