Java v VB

    As part of a project I am doing, I'm required to state reasons for programming in Java rather than Visual Basic.  I'd be grateful if anyone would be able to tell me what advantages Java has over Visual Basic or visa versa, whether this is to do with portability or otherwise.  Even a point in the right direction would be helpful.
