digital certificates or ids

    hi everybody,
      I'm planning to do a demonstration of secure data transfer using Digital certificates (ids) in Java (X.509 format).what wil be requirements for undertaking the project?
      Like, Is Java1.4 required or Java1.3 is sufficient...? And I have IIS on Win XP.Any suggestions or ideas to start off my proj work.Help would be greatly appreciated.
