My C++ skills on Windows are pretty out of date. This book really helped me get back up to speed and to apply my existing .NET and Visual Studio knowledge.

I first learned how to write programs in C and C++ when I attended Grad school between 1989 and 1991. In my first job after college I worked as a application developer writing C code that interfaced with an Oracle database. But since I left that job, I have not needed to write C or C++ program. So when I got this book I was interested to see if I could relearn the C++ in order to write an application with it. In reading the book, I discovered that this book is first and foremost a book on how code windows applications in Microsoft C++ in Microsoft's Visual Studio on the .NET framework.

This is a great book if you are looking to learn the how to use Microsoft C++ in Visual Studio 2008 environment. This book also provides a good introduction the basic language elements of the C++ language. And like all Murach books, this book provides many great coding examples illustrating C++ language elements that are discussed in this book.

One thing I really liked about this book is how the author discussed how to test and debug C++ code in the Visual Studio environment. This is an important topic that all developers need to use when developing any application.

The only thing that I didn't really like about this book is that the author did not start describing what Object Oriented program is until the third section of the book. I found that I did not truly understand the C++ language and especially the C++ language syntax until I understood these concepts well. While there is a brief 4 page introduction to Object Oriented programming in chapter 3, what is written there does not go in enough detail to help new developers understand some of the descriptive text written in this book before object oriented programming concepts are discussed in more detail.

I was also surprised in reading the book that this book did not discuss pointers, their syntax, or how to use them. This surprised me because it wasn't until I truly understood pointers and their syntax that I felt I truly understood the C language. It could be that this was omitted because pointers are not as essential in Microsoft C++ as they were in the C code I programmed in the passed. I feel that the author of this book should have spent some part of the book should have at least introducing pointers discussing when and if they should be used.

In the introduction to this book Prentiss Knowlton, the books author, writes that this book was written with the following goals in mind: to teach basic C++ quickly and easily in the context of Visual Studio 2008 and the .NET framework; teach how to use C++ 2008 to develop Windows Forms applications; and teach how to easy it is use Visual Studio to compile, run, and enhance legacy C and native C++ programs. I feel that this book accomplishes all of these goals because after reading this book, I feel that I could write a basic Windows application in C++.

Murach's C++ 2008 is a well-written, easy to follow, and informative book covering a wide variety of topics in C++ for Windows. The format of the book is extremely helpful, with detailed instructions on one page, and code examples on the opposite page. This book is highly recommended for anyone looking to develop Windows applications with C++, Visual Studio, and the .NET platform.
