CodeWorld: Open Source Programming and Math Education

CodeWorld is a program to introduce children to computer programming based on open source programming tools and languages.  Middle-school aged students create their own pictures, animations, and ultimately design and implement their own video games, using basic algebra and geometry along the way.  The program combines an interactive web-based development environment with an easy to use graphics library, making it easy to start creating new creative content in the very first hour.  CodeWorld has been taught in a local school for the past school year, and we present our experiences with the open source tools and the class itself.  You will also have the chance to play video games created by this year's class and talk to their creators.

Chris Smith

Chris Smith is the Director of Learning Technology with Brindle Waye, Ltd.  He has been programming for fun since 1984 at the age of 5, and professionally since 1997.  He is passionate about both programming
languages and open source software, and maintains and contributes to numerous projects, including the Snap web application framework.  Chris developed and taught the CodeWorld program, including the
web-based programming environment, for the 2011-2012 school year.

Sue Spengler

Sue Spengler is the Lead Teacher, Superintendent, Principal, Custodian, Secretary, and Lunch Lady at the Little School on Vermijo, a village school in Colorado Springs.  She has been teaching for 20 years, across the spectrum from middle school to adult education.  Sue co-taught and advised on the CodeWorld program for the past year.

Sophia, Grant, Marcello, Mikayla, Sydney, and Skyler

These six students have been learning from the CodeWorld program for the past year.  Their work includes a selection of video games of their own design, which they would like to share with the community.
