TOPIC ABSTRACT
CodeWorld: Open Source Programming and Math Education

CodeWorld is a program to introduce children to computer programming based on open source programming tools and languages.  Middle-school aged students create their own pictures, animations, and ultimately design and implement their own video games, using basic algebra and geometry along the way.  The program combines an interactive web-based development environment with an easy to use graphics library, making it easy to start creating new creative content in the very first hour.  CodeWorld has been taught in a local school for the past school year, and we present our experiences with the open source tools and the class itself.  You will also have the chance to play video games created by this year's class and talk to their creators.
