The Making of a Sidescroller

Hardware accelerated HTML5 Canvas has arrived! Recent releases of Chrome, iOS5, and Apple's Safari on Lion all have hardware accelerated Canvas, and it makes a huge difference in performance.

Hardware accelerated Canvas makes it possible to implement full-featured video games that run smoothly, not only in desktop browsers, but also on tablets.

In this talk, you will see how to implement a sidescroller video game (ala Mario Bros.), complete with scrolling background, parallax, sprites, collision detection and explosions, that runs at a rock solid 60 frames/second... on an iPad.

David Geary is the author of Core HTML5 Canvas, and is the co-founder of the Denver HTML5 meetup group. David is a prolific and passionate author and speaker, and is a 3-time JavaOne Rock Star.

HTML5 and Windows 8

In this all-code delivery, web developers will discover that they already know a lot about building apps for Windows 8.  A sample app will be created with JavaScript code demonstrating how to use the WinJS library.  Key points for Metro style app development will be highlighted by implementing popular feature requests using HTML5 & CSS3.

J. "Michael" Palermo IV is a Developer Evangelist with Microsoft.  In his years prior to joining Microsoft, Michael served as a Microsoft Regional Director and MVP.  Michael has authored several technical books and has published online courses with Pluralsight on HTML5 technologies.  Michael continues to share his passion for software development by speaking at developer events around the world.
