Hi!

August's WebMapSocial was a very nice evening. Much thanks to everyone who participated.

Quick FYI: our October event will be on the 6th; that is the first - not third - Tuesday of the month. We've changed the date to accommodate the mapping software company Ortelius (they're flying in from Indiana). We will also be featuring WebMapSocial member Ragi Burhum presenting an overview of PostGIS "and friends." Please make a note of the change.

This month's lineup is scheduled to include:

Marina Fisher and Robert Lor from Sun Microsystems presenting on PostgreSQL with DTrace. All developers using PostgreSQL with mapping extensions should attend. Marina will do an intro on PosgreSQL in the SocialMedia / Networking and Robert will focus on DTrace related content.

Marina Fisher is a web technologist with Sun Startup Essentials team. She enjoys large scale Web architecture and emerging technologies. As part of her work she interacts with startups and open source communities and addresses multitude of the social networking application facets - from scalability to cloud computing, from Java to MySQL, from mobility to clear energy. She is a frequent speaker at the community event and hosts Greater San Francisco Bay Apache LAMP Meetup Groups at Sun Santa Clara campus.

Robert Lor is a senior engineer in Sun's ISV Engineering organization. He has worked on operating system/Java application development and performance optimization for more than 15 years. Recently, he has worked closely with the PostgreSQL community to improve the observability of PostgreSQL by introducing DTrace probes to the database server.

Sushi Suzuki is practitioner, student, teacher, and researcher of design at Stanford University and will present his course ME310 (me310.stanford.edu) and his research on social networks in design communities. ME310 is a Master's Level course on Design Innovation where students from Stanford University and other international universities work together to develop, prototype, and test product and service concepts for corporate partners. Sushi's research investigates Facebook connections amongst design teams and identifies potential opportunities for social network data to be used as indicators of team performance and other measures. We meet in Kiev Training Room of Building 40 at Google HQ in Mountain View. To locate our meeting place, use this map . If you've never been there, you may need a few extra minutes to navigate through the campus. To get to Kiev Training Room, you must enter through the lobby of Building 40. Once in the lobby, Google requires that you sign an electronic NDA. Please be courteous of their professional space and grant them this request. Security will escort you to Kiev Training Room after you've signed in. Dinner and beverages are graciously donated by Google so come prepared to chat, network, have fun and get your WebMapSocial fill. Thank you for your understanding.
