Optimizing Java-Based MySQL Applications

Optimizing Java-Based MySQL Applications

We will be combining user group meetings this month (Java/MySQL). The first hour will be dedicated to Hadoop (due to postponement of the Java user Group meeting), with the second hour focusing on Java/MySQL optimization.

In this session, we'll discuss how to wring that last little bit of performance out of your Java applications deployed on MySQL by not using the out-of-the-box configuration. Connector/J has nearly 200 configuration options, many of which affect performance. While these options are documented, many aren't shown alongside the use cases they apply to. Out of the box, Connector/J is configured with the principle of least surprise, and is JDBC-compliant, and provides a pretty generic view of MySQL. We'll show you how to move from generic to customized, illustrating how to set Connector/J options that will deliver the best performance for your specific application.

Topics covered will include:

  • Load balancing and load splitting
  • Bulk data loading
  • Automatic Batch DML rewriting
  • Configurations that approach the edge of safety, but that are useful for those few % points of performance

In addition, perhaps we can include some holiday cheer too ...

Hope to see you there.

Scott
