Abstract:
What is the current state of programming education in northeast Ohio? As with many professions in this tough economy, the IT industry has dramatically and fundamentally changed in the past decade. Has the programming curriculum taught at local colleges and universities adapted to this change?
Taking a look at the way that teaching Java has evolved since its release over 10 years ago, we will discuss several key questions:
- What are employers really looking for in programming students?
- Are employers willing to provide internships?
- What type of specific skills (like languages) are employers looking for?
- How technical should the students be?
- How non-technical should the students be?
- Are there really jobs available for these students?
One very interesting question to cover is whether or not Java is actually a good teaching language.
