PHPNW February 2012 - Manchester, United Kingdom
happened 9 years ago
For our first UG meeting of 2012 we have Mark Baker giving a talk entitled "Why Should I Consider Compiling PHP?" It's a question that crops up quite frequently on PHP boards: how can I compile my PHP code? Some people believe it will boost the speed of their scripts, or reduce memory; others consider compilation as a possible form of obfuscation to prevent their code being "stolen". A compiler can (at least partly) fulfil these requirements, but creates a whole host of additional problems.

As we have done in previous years, this August we are having Lightning Talks! Lightning talks are really good fun and a great way to start getting speaking experience as they are short and fast paced. The idea of a lightning talk is that you have 20 slides, and each slide is on screen for 20 seconds. This is open for anyone to have a go, and if you would like to, then there is no need to pre-register, just turn up on the day with your talk prepared. The topic can be anything of interest to you

On PHPNW's 3rd birthday, we have Rowan Merewood talking about Dependency Injection. Dependency injection is the process of moving the responsibility for creating resources out of the classes using them. This practice leads to looser coupling of components, which leads to a more portable system and enables proper mocking of dependencies when testing. At the class level, there are a number of design patterns to follow that provide DI in different ways, each with their own pros and cons.
