This month, as part of our Back to Basics series we have a talk by Derick Rethans on Xdebug. This talk teaches you how to detect and debug PHP scripts with the free open source tool Xdebug, which is an extension to PHP. The first part will quickly show how to get started with Xdebug. The second part of the session will cover detecting problems in your scripts by showing how Xdebug provides debugging aides in the form of stack/function traces, dumps of variables, modified PHP functions.

Following on from our talk on PHPUnit last month, this month as part of our back to basics series we have Lorna Mitchell talking on Object Oriented Programming in PHP. This session is a fast tour of the many features of OOP in PHP, complete with code examples. We'll walk through all the theory of classes and objects, how to declare and use them and move on through inheritance and how to design object hierarchies.

This month we have a talk by Sebastian Marek and Ben Selby entitled "Back to basics - PHP_Codesniffer". This is the first talk from "Back to basics" series. There are several tools out there that help to develop and maintain high quality PHP code. They allow you to identify the most fragile and messy parts of your codebase. PHP_CodeSniffer tokenises PHP, JavaScript and CSS files and detects violations of a defined set of coding standards.

This month we have a talk entitled "Pratical ORMs" by Juozas Kaziukėnas. With PHP 5 (which came quite some time ago) all the benefits of OOP can now be applied to data access patterns, however still a great portion of PHP applications speak to a database like in PHP 4 years. There is a solution for that and it's called an Object Relational Mapping (ORM) - it will save you developing time, maintaining costs and greatly improve application architecture.
