binary data to image resource

  does anybody know how to convert binary data into an image resource?
  

  
  i've retrieved the binary data from a database, and if i give a JPEG header and echo the binary data, it works lovelyily (if there is such a word)
  

  
  but i also want to do some stuff to it on-the-fly..... how can i convert it?
