I have bought hundreds of books in the last 25 years and have been programming in VB since Nantucket Clipper in the DOS environment faded (after dBase II), but this just may be the best comprehensive book yet on Visual Basic! I buy from Wrox, Microsoft, Murach and many other fine publishers, but this is truly a great tool to have in your arsenal. I very seldom write reviews, but I felt like I needed to give back any way I could. I don't know Rod Stevens, but my hat is off to him and his team at WROX. Thank You!!! Also, thanks to Microsoft for putting out a great product in Visual Studio 2008!

This is a good reference for people who, like myself, have some experience with VB and almost none with .NET. I can skim thru the book without reading ever word and still find lots of useful info. An advanced .NET programmer would probably not find much here but it works really well for me.

This is the fourth book I have purchased about VB 2008 and it is much the best. It is not the book if you are looking for an introduction to VB, but if you have already been introduced, it is marvelous. He gives the details that are missing in the other books. I am sure that it cannot cover everything in detail, because VB is too big for any one book, but it does a good job. I have only had it a couple days and already found a number of helpful features that I was unaware of.

I'm a occasional programmer on visual basic, most of my work deals with mathematical and physical modelling. If you have some experience with previous version of visual basic, you will find this book very user friendly. It goes directly to the point in most cases, documentation is good and the web examples also helps a lot in understanding the new features of visual studio. I found specially helpful the graphics chapters and how to prepare our software to be ready for windows vista.

For those beginners who want to learn how to program in VB.net or VB 2008, this book is not for you. Note that the book cover says "Programmer Reference". If you are already a programmer in VB, then this is your reference. I know how to program in VBA (Visual basic for application) yet I found it hard to follow the book beyond chapter 8. The first 7 chapters were spent explaining some very simple stuff, like how to color a button and how to rearrange the control menu, etc. and when the "Getting Started" part started, I got lost.
Don't expect simple examples that teach you how to create your first VB program. In other words: No "Hello World" program. Maybe I will find this book useful next year when I'm more knowledgeable in VB.
