With the advent of Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS), the days of you needing to design, develop, test, and deploy your own mobile backend are gone. With BaaS, you can spin up a service which then acts as the backend for your apps. The usual set of features are data storage, authentication, and easy triggering of push notifications. Part of the presentation will go into the motivation / reasoning behind using a BaaS (the biggest of course being the time savings) as well as detail what aspects work together (Cloud BaaS + Android + GCM in this case). Then we'll cover how one option, Azure Mobile Services, helps solve these problems when building your Android applications.
Chris Risner is a member of a team a team at Microsoft showing how developers can combine different elements from different platforms to build mobile apps.
