UModel for low cost UML

This article was originally published in VSJ, which is now part of Developer Fusion.
Altova’s UModel 2005 is a low cost but relatively complete environment for working with UML 2.0. It has drawing tools and Java code generation, reverse engineering and support for round-tripping, so code and model can both be modified and kept in sync.

UModel offers context sensitive entry helpers, syntax colouring, cascading styles, customisable design elements, multiple layout views, and unlimited undo/redo, coupled with full modelling functionality, including use case; class and object packages; component and deployment diagrams.

The Java code generated by UModel is compatible with Eclipse, JBuilder, Visual J# and other popular Java development environments. A model syntax checker is provided to detect drawing errors or inconsistencies before they are included downstream in code. The Java code created is defined in customisable templates, which you can modify to optimise for your compiler or target platform.
