javascript question... how to manipulate variables in a form

  so I am working on a form for my classs. it iss all generated with javascript. I have a drop down that allows a user to pick a month and a year. I want  my page to allow who ever to choose a month and have the value of the month to store a variable. PLEASEEEEEEE how do i go about doing this???????????
