Who will be talking?

Dave Foy - "Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul"

About Dave
--------------

Dave Foy is one half of Woof, a friendly Hull-based online marketing consultancy working with a select group of clients to help them attract visitors and boost sales. Prior to co-founding Woof he ran a small web design/development studio for 8 years. Dave is never far from a cup of tea (nice and strong, no sugar, drop of milk).

The Talk
----------

Whether we like it or not, developers need to sell themselves and their work. This is true whether you're an employee, actively looking for work, a freelancer or selling your own app or product.

The good news is, you don't have to sell your soul to the devil to attract customers or clients. Online marketing can seem a dirty word, especially to developers, but I hope to convince you it needn't be.

I'll be explaining simple, effective techniques to engage in online marketing, helping you promote yourself, your skills, your products and your services.

I'll give advice on how to identify and target your ideal audience, without having to get your hands dirty in the murky waters of SEO. And the good news is, you won't have to become one of those 'social media' spamming plonkers we've all come to know and love...

I'll be discussing some sound, simple processes and techniques to build long-term value in your services, your business and your products and attract your target audience.

Matt Seward - "Can HTML5 reverse the decline of the web?"

About Matt
---------------

Matt graduated from Brunel University (BSc Industrial Design) in 1995, during which time he also worked and studied in Italy.

His career began at Apple Computer Europe where he developed web skills producing sites in 9 languages for 12 countries.

Matt left Apple to help build a London based agency, winning contracts with Mattel, Barclays, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Cisco. They were exciting times with projects that really pushed the boundaries of Internet technologies.

Before establishing kilo75 in 2000, Matt worked as an Executive Producer at Ogylvy Interactive, project managing large projects for Nestle and Unilever amongst others.

Today Matt is involved with all aspects of design and development. He loves the process of applying design thinking to all our work, making the Internet work as hard as possible for our clients.

Outside of work Matt is also a trustee of Leeds Housing Concern, a social housing charity in Leeds. Also a member of the LSx Management Team. LSx is the Leeds Web Festival, organising design and technology events all year round.

The Talk
----------
In August last year Wired Magazine declared "The Web is Dead. Long live the Internet" (http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/08/ff_webrip/all/1)

In Matt's talk he'll review some of the innovations in HTML5 that he believes could unlock a new era of creativity in web design. With references to recent projects by kilo75 and others we'll explore some possibilities and limitations of this technology and ask where HTML5 should reside in a modern-day web developers toolkit?

We'll have the normal great chat and networking before and after the speakers. The talks will be commencing at 7pm.

See you there!

John
