Sun GlassFish/OpenSolaris Web Stack - The Next Generation Open Web Infrastructure

Murthy Chintalapati, Sun Senior Engineering Manager Jyri Virkki, Sun Chief Architect

Title of Session:

Short abstract of session: The OpenSolaris Web Stack is an open source project consists of popular open source web infrastructure (known as LAMP or SAMP) technologies, such as Apache HTTPd, PHP, Python, MySQL, lighttpd, as well as GlassFish and Tomcat. As a fully integrated in the OpenSolaris operating system, Web Stack delivers close integration with OpenSolaris innovations such as DTrace, ZFS, SMF and RBAC. OpenSolaris also provides a fully integrated PHP development environment with NetBeans. The Sun GlassFish Portfolio is the companion product offering which features the Enterprise Manager to manage and monitor diverse set of components. The Web Stack is optimized for scaling on modern multi-core systems. This session presents a technology overview of Web Stack, its ease of use, performance and monitoring.

Bio(s): Murthy Chintalapati (cvr) is a development engineering leader with two decades of building, leading and developing high performance teams in the fast-paced global environment. He specializes in infrastructure software products for enterprises deploying web 2.0 and open source technologies. He is responsible for Sun's web tier products, viz., Sun Web Server and the Web Stack. Murthy holds five U.S. patents and received Sun Microsystems Chairman’s Award for Innovation. He holds a M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology.

Jyri J. Virkki is the chief architect and lead of OpenSolaris Web Stack project and the Sun GlassFish Web Stack product line. He specializes in server software security technologies and performance. Jyri holds M.S. in Information Networking from Carnegie Mellon University.

ScaleDB (MySQL) Storage Engine Moshe Shadmon, Founder and CTO of ScaleDB

Abstract

ScaleDB is a general-purpose transactional storage engine for MySQL providing High Performance and Scalability for large disk based data sets.

The ScaleDB architecture is based on a shared disk approach. It allows multiple MySQL servers to share the same physical database while guaranteeing the consistency of concurrent updates and reads operations. This approach supports growth in the data size and the number of users by adding additional servers to the cluster with no disruption to existing processes. It eliminates the need for partitioning to balance data distribution and workloads.

ScaleDB indexes are unique and based on innovative Multi-Table Indexing. These indexes are highly compressed, independent of the key size, and minimize the number of IOs to update and search data. In addition, the indexes provide views over the data by retrieving data dynamically from multiple tables, in a highly efficient manner, and without the need to build the views in advance.

This session will explain the architecture of the shared disk solution and the technology behind the Multi-Table Indexing.

Bio

Moshe Shadmon is the founder and CTO of ScaleDB. Moshe has more than 20 years of experience in both technical and management roles. Moshe’s technical experience has been in the areas of high performance indexing solutions as well as the development of a unified solution for structured and semi-structured data. Since 2006, Moshe has become increasingly interested in the opportunity presented by the open source databases and founded ScaleDB to develop a database engine for MySQL targeting performance, efficiency and scalability with the largest data sets.
