ABOUT

What is 'Cause It's My Birthday'?

'Cause It's My Birthday' is a birthday party like no other!

When friends Doug Campbell and Sloane Berrent realized they were turning 30 within days of each other this upcoming October (3rd and 5th respectively), they decided they wanted to do something memorable that not only celebrated life and the beginning of their 30s, but also included a strong charitable component.

This was not a surprise to their friends and families however; in 2007 Doug completed a worldwide tour raising money for nonprofits called The Tuxedo Travels and has since been looking for new ways to engage people in online campaigns for causes. In early September, Sloane returned from a 3-month fellowship with the micro-lending nonprofit, KIVA, which stationed her in rural Philippines. She continues to be focused on a market she calls "the cause-filled life" and is always looking for ways to continue her efforts to bring people together for causes they can believe in. So it was no surprise that both social-centric adventurers wanted to do something meaningful for their birthdays.

Most people think of their birthday's as a time of receiving - What is bigger on your birthday than working to save the lives of others?

Both Doug and Sloane already use social media and community building tools in their work (Doug founded the monthly Mindshare LA event and Sloane runs TheCausemopolitan.com) so it made sense to leverage these assets. They decided to take their birthday week and make it into a national tour, create a website with an online donation mechanism and elect their friends to help organize the logistics of the parties.

Cause It's My Birthday.com was born.

From October 3rd-9th, Doug and Sloane will wake up, fly to a new city, celebrate their birthdays with a fundraiser party (where 100% of the proceeds go to malaria nets hosted by the nonprofit NettingNations.org[/url) and then do it all again the next day. In traditional Tuxedo Travels fashion, both will wear formal attire the whole time. That will be quite a sight in the airports!

THE CITIES
• New York (Saturday, October 3, 2009)
  • Miami (Sunday, October 4, 2009)
  • New Orleans (Monday, October 5, 2009)
  • Chicago (Tuesday, October 6, 2009)
  • Seattle (Wednesday, October 7, 2009)
  • San Francisco (Thursday, October 8, 2009)
  • Los Angeles (Friday, October 9, 2009)
  •
The parties are an opportunity for like-minded, socially conscious professionals to get together, celebrate and make a 100% tax-deductible donation to purchase a malaria net. Why these cities? It was hard to pick only 7. Don't feel left out if your city isn't listed here. You can still make a donation and still get involved online and even offline with sponsorship assistance.

What's more - 100% of the proceeds will go towards the purchasing and distribution of malaria nets in rural northern Ghana, where malaria is a real threat to human life. No administrative cost, no hidden operating cost. All towards the purchase and distribution of the nets. The goal is to raise $70,000 in one month.

It can be done. But only with your help. So please, get involved today!

    WHY MALARIA?

Malaria is highly preventable and the techniques are cost-efficient. A malaria net has a low price point (approximately $5.00) and yet millions world-wide are without them. Although malaria is virtually non-existent in the continental United States and in Europe, it continues to be one of the biggest disease killers in the world. It is estimated that between 1 and 3 million people die from malaria each year, 90% of those deaths occurring in Sub-Saharan Africa. One out of every 20 African children dies of malaria before the age of 5, a demographic that also accounts for 70% of all malaria deaths—that's equivalent to one child dying from malaria every 30 seconds, or 7 jumbo jets full of children dying each day. Malaria carrying mosquito's only bite at night, so having a net to sleep under drastically decreases malaria rates. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets, or ITNs, are one of the most effective methods for the prevention of malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa. For every 1000 ITNs distributed, 5.5 lives are saved.

Giving someone a net is not only a chance at life, it's opening up the window to consider having a future.

'Cause It's My Birthday' has partnered with Netting Nations, an effective nonprofit that is dedicated to providing malaria nets worldwide and truly "netting an entire nation". They are willing to spend 100% on the nets and distribution and not take money for overhead or administrative costs.

    FUNDRAISER GOAL

The fund-raising goal is $70,000. That's what it takes to fill an entire container of nets - so about 16,000 nets. Vestergaard Frandsen, one of only three WHO-approved companies for net making, will be providing the nets. The target drop will be in northern Ghana in late 2009-early 2010.

Here's where it gets fun. There are many ways to donate and get involved. After all 100% of money raised is going towards the nets.

    HOW YOU CAN HELP

Help host one of the parties. Work on logistics, music, sponsorship. Invite friends to a party! Make a donation. Tell your friends about the campaign. Write a blog about the campaign. Post causeitsmybirthday.com on your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or other chosen social network. Tell some more of your friends. And if it's YOUR birthday week - think about directing your gifts to a good cause.

It's more than a birthday party - it's using a birthday as a platform for change, and a chance to get involved.

Help us raise $70,000 towards fighting malaria!
