The convergence of a number of trends is accelerating the changes that Web 2.0 has made on media, society and business. The rise of social tools -- like social networks and social media -- has had enormous impacts, already. Recently, the emergence of microstreaming applications -- like Twitter and Facebook -- have moved us into a real-time web, which is potentially just as disruptive an innovation as the social web has been to date. This is true of Web based communication, but also is reaching into older media – like newspapers and television -- and reworking the nature of broadcast. But these trends, in themselves important, are just the start of a major shift in how a new real-time Web will operate, the benefits it will offer, and how we will perceive it. And this is happening as a new generation of always-on, web-enabled mobile devices -- iPad, iPhone, Android, and others -- is rolling out. This convergence is leading to a whole new web, which poses great opportunities and challenges for us all.
