Tablet becomes focus form factor for Windows 8

Microsoft seem to be having trouble stemming the tide of Windows 8 builds leaking out of Redmond left right and centre.

Yet another build of its as yet only just announced – let alone anywhere near ready for anyone to actually look at – operating system has made its way onto the treacherous internets, and enthusiasts have been picking it apart to see what’s new.

While there’s rumoured to be significant changes under the hood (it’s notoriously hard to be able to tell regardless), there are some nice UI changes which keep on pointing towards a tablet PC experience being front and centre of the Windows 8 platform. As well as a more touch-friendly on screen keyboard and split configuration for two-thumbed typing while holding, SMS and GPS support make it into the build.

Meanwhile, some developers are set to be left wondering about their future on the Windows platform until September at the BUILD conference: nobody from Microsoft is willing to give up any information pertaining to Silverlight support in the new OS, even to Microsoft’s go-to on this kind of developer backlash. Whether the conference will abate concerns remains to be seen, but there are hints of some major new technologies to be announced.
