the decision to move to a domain should be based on a number of factors.

How many users you will have
Do people use multiple computers or just normally assigned to their own computer?
Do you need to assign permissions/polices for a particular user or group, or per computer?

How well does the system you use now work?

Do you have any security issues?

You will need a Server hardware and software.

It is a lot of work, so you should consider whether the benefits are worth cost, but there are benefits...

Increased control over users and what they can access
    Roaming or Mandatory profiles
    Central location for backups
    Userhome drives
    sharepoint (Server 2003 only)
    DHCP
others i can't think of at the moment........

unless you have issues with staff accessing files they shouldn't or other issues, it may not be worth the cost for only 7 or 8 computers

    hope this helps
