XHTML question(s)

Hello, I'm new to this site and am a training Webdesigner.  I strictly follow the W3C's standards, but after searching throughout the web I have seen many over developers damning XHTML and many different reasons as to why the W3C have introduced XHTML at all.

I have always thought that the reason XHTML was introduced as a progression between HTML (which is fairly sloppy and largely unorganised) and XML (which is much stricter, cleaner and accesable) am I wrong and am I also wrong in believing that the idea behing this is a good one?

I don't mean to seem naive or foolish, it's just I have seen so many conflicting views and explinations on the web and wish to educate myself more on the industry I am being introduced to.
