Houston Perl Meetup

The Houston Perl Meetup group helps people interested in the Perl programming language meet. This group is associated with the Houston.pm group associated with the Perl Mongers.Anyone who is interested in the Perl programming language is welcome. No experience with the language is required. The group can answer questions or help mentor new programmers through problems.

    The June Houston.pm meeting has been postponed by a week so that we don't conflict with YAPC::NA.This month, G. Wade Johnson will present "Perl Unit Testing: Tools and Techniques". The meeting will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 7pm. We will meet at 3131 W. Alabama, as usual.I hope to see you there.

Alabama, as usual.Someone will be available in the lobby between 6:40pm and 7pm. We'll go up to the meeting together. As always, there is free parking on top of the parking garage.

    We have an unusual opportunity this month to have brian d foy talk to the group. Many of you will recognize brian's name as the author of several Perl books, including "Learning Perl", "Intermediate Perl", "Mastering Perl", and "Effective Perl Programming". He also published "The Perl Review". He has consulted and trained in Perl as a partner at Stonehenge consulting. Since he is only in town for a couple of days in the third week of November we are delaying the meeting by a week.

    Reini Urban has volunteered to present for the October meeting. The topic is a basic introduction to the Perl compiler.A number of you may not have been aware that Perl had a compiler. Most people are content to use Perl in its normal compile/execute mode. Because people had use cases that would benefit from building an executable from their Perl code, a Perl compiler was built years ago.Recently Reini has been taking the old compiler code and updating it to support more current Perls.

    Brett Estrade has volunteered to make a quick presentation on the Qore language.The basics of the Qore language will be introduced from the perspective of a Perl programmer, include basic data structures, object oriented capabilities, and multi-threading. Ideas for future talks regarding Qore, Perl threading/asynchronicity, and using Qore with Perl will be discussed by all.
