In 1983, Lisanne Bainbridge, an industrial psychologist at University College in London, wrote a seminal paper that should give software developers 30 years later some pause as to our current investments of both hope and money in automation.

At the June Lean Software Austin meeting, we'll be reviewing "Ironies of Automation", an eight-page paper on the effects of automation that contradict the expectations and the dreams of error-proofed human industry.

As we barrel forward into the second decade of Agile Development and its assertions about automation, join Austin's Lean Software Development community for a frank discussion on the unseen presumptions that continue to fuel our drive for automation.

We'll hear from folks with many years of experience with automation on software projects, as well as those who are just starting out. We'll contrast our expectations, our hopes, and our observations with Lisanne Bainbridge's discoveries, and explore how they might apply to software development, just how far we might apply apply them, and whether there are things that we're not willing to accept.

As always, we'll be looking for deeper root causes that are more likely rooted in our bias and judgement than in our technology.

You can read the paper at: http://j.mp/ironies

If you don't find time to read the paper, come to the meeting anyway. It promises to be another lively night of conversation and contradiction as Lean Software Austin continues its commitment to tipping ever more of software development's sacred cows.

Our gracious sponsor, Compass Learning, will be providing pizza and drinks, as well as their spacious meeting facilities.

Parking is available for Lean Software Austin participants in Compass Learning's parking lot immediately adjacent to Compass Leaning on the North side of the building at the corner of Colorado and 3rd.
