OASIS creates installation standard

This article was originally published in VSJ, which is now part of Developer Fusion.
Members of the OASIS international standards consortium recently announced plans to collaborate on a standardised method for expressing software installation characteristics required for lifecycle management in distributed, multi-platform environments. The new Solution Deployment Descriptor (SDD) Technical Committee will develop schemas to describe the characteristics of installable units of software, relevant for core aspects of deployment, configuration, and maintenance. Its task will be to define XML schemas for SDDs, a package format to associate SDDs, resource content, and software artefacts.

If the new standard is successful, its adoption will require the evolution of new features in installation utilities, including the Windows Installer, to work with the new schemas. It also opens up the possibly of a wide range of new third party installation managers including uninstallers and configuration managers.
