Windows Phone 7 "NoDo" update finally arrives, for some

The Windows Phone 7 update that early adopters have been waiting quite literally months for has finally arrived - kind of.

Last month we reported how Microsoft rolled out an update which was actually just a preparatory release, which didn't end up going that well - it caused massive problems on some Samsung handsets, causing Microsoft to freeze the release and un-brick the phones that were no longer functioning.

Due some time in February, this update which has been coined "NoDo" (far from the catchy dessert-related Android versions from Google) brings copy and paste as its primary feature, improvements in app switching speed, and a whole range of bug fixes. Quite why Microsoft thinks it is acceptable to join Apple and ship a release where the headline feature is copy and paste is something that is yet to be entirely clarified.

However, if you're lucky enough to own a consumer (i.e. non-developer or branded) Windows Phone 7 device, don't expect to get your hands on the update any time soon. It seems that Microsoft has learnt its lesson of updates past, and has only deployed the update to unbranded handsets such as those that were given out to developers for free at various Microsoft events leading up to the device's release.
