Ride in a houseboat & rejuvenate oneself: At the backwaters of Kerala

A recent innovation in the Kerala Tourism sector is the introduction of the houseboats called as ‘Kettuvallams’ in the local parlance.  The houseboats used in the backwaters are actually the improved versions of the former ‘Kuttanadan Kettuvallams’ which frequented the backwaters, lakes and lagoons in Aleppey, ‘the Venice of the East’ transporting various goods and people from place to place. A ride in these houseboats is a unique experience to explore the unexplored avenues of ‘God’s Own Country’.  You can continuously cruise through the palm-fringed backwaters while enjoying all sorts of games and other activities. You will also be enjoying the gastronomic delights of the typical Kerala cuisine while on the move. The so-called houseboats are built according to a unique technology developed by the skilled artisans.  Not even one nail is used to put together the various wooden parts.  Putting together huge planks of wood requires special skill and experience.  The wooden planks are tied together and then fish oil or cashew nut kernel oil is applied to the wooden structure and left to cure which normally takes several days.
